The Mid-Autumn Festival is almost here! This major Chinese holiday is a celebration of the harvest and a time of giving thanks, lighting lanterns, spending time with loved ones, and eating the holiday’s essential snack: mooncakes. Mooncakes are a rich, dense pastry with a variety of fillings, the most common being sweet bean paste, lotus seed paste, mung bean, and mixed nuts, and some also include a duck egg yolk for added richness. This year, The Mid-Autumn Festival will be celebrated on September 17th, and traditional mooncakes from America’s most iconic Chinese bakeries are shipping straight to your door.
Kee Wah Bakery – Hong Kong
You won’t find one person in Hong Kong who does not know Kee Wah Bakery. Founded by Wong Yip-Wing in 1938, this renowned company started off as a humble streetcorner tuck shop. Today, as one of Hong Kong’s oldest bakeries, Kee Wah is still the golden standard for traditional Hong Kong treats, especially mooncakes. These are classic and traditional as can be, in flavors including lotus seed paste, red bean paste, date paste, and savory mixed nuts with ham.
Dong Phuong Bakery – New Orleans
Back in the early 1980s, Huong and De Van Tran, along with their three children, emigrated from Vietnam to New Orleans to chase the American dream. Huong and her family continue to run Dong Phuong, which has since become a cornerstone of The Big Easy’s thriving Vietnamese community and was named an “American Classic” by the James Beard Foundation in 2018. Their mooncakes come in packs of 20, with a wide variety of flavors including white lotus, coconut, durian, abalone, and shark’s fin.
Lady M Confections – New York City
Iconic Japanese-French bakery Lady M Confections prides itself on creating the freshest cakes and confectionery delights, including its signature Mille Crepes Cake. Lady Wong Patisserie – New York City
A slice of Southeast Asia in the heart of Manhattan, Lady Wong Patisserie was founded by the Malaysian-born husband-and-wife duo of Morgan Anthony and Seleste Tan, who spent a decade honing their skills in Singapore before moving to New York. Special for the holiday, they’ve crafted mooncakes in four super-creative flavors: Pandan Coconut with White Lotus, Tangerine Citrus Peel with White Lotus, Green Tea Matcha with White Lotus, and Melon Seed with White Lotus.

Dubbed “the most elegant chocolate shop in Piedmont,” Venchi was founded in Turin in 1878 and has more than 350 varieties of chocolate, 90 gelato flavors, and more than 130 shops in 70 countries and counting.
