The Nuns of New Skete Story
he Nuns of New Skete began making cheesecake in the 1970s as a way to support their monastery, and it has since become the community’s signature craft. Here is how a cloister of Orthodox nuns became one of America’s most beloved cheesecake makers.
A monastic community rooted in New York
In 1969, the Nuns of New Skete moved from their Roman Catholic Poor Clare cloister in Evansville, Indiana, to Cambridge, New York, to build an Eastern Christian monastic community. They settled alongside the Monks of New Skete, who had founded New Skete Monastery in 1966 and helped the nuns get established. The word “skete” refers to a small, family-style monastic community, and the nuns chose the name “New Skete” to reflect their goal of a modern Orthodox community rooted in contemporary American life.
From odd jobs to cheesecake
To support themselves, the nuns rely on donations and the proceeds of their own work. In the early years they cleaned houses, painted iconography, and tailored clothing. Everything changed when Sister Magdalene Oliver, an avid baker, arrived and began making cheesecakes. By 1975, the community had perfected its recipe and cheesecake baking became a shared calling. The rest is delicious history.
A daily rhythm of prayer and baking
Today, the nuns bake their famous gourmet cheesecakes between morning and afternoon prayers. They are best known for their 6-inch and 9-inch cheesecakes, but they also craft seasonal treats, including:
- Cheese spreads: creamy spreads in flavors like Bacon, Cranberry Walnut, Creamy Cheddar, Horseradish, Jalapeño, Olive, Spicy Garlic, and Tawny Port
- Fruitcake: 2 lb. fruitcake filled with brandy-soaked dried fruit, nuts, and spices
