German Chocolate Cake

German chocolate cake is layered chocolate cake frosted with coconut-pecan frosting. The world first learned of this delicious cake in 1957 when a recipe was printed in The Dallas Morning News

Despite its name, this cake did not originate in Germany. The cake was the creation of homemaker Mrs. George Clay, who named the cake after its key ingredient, Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate.

New Orleans baker Beulah Ledner invented Doberge Cake in the early 20th century. The cake, which is based on a Hungarian Dobos torte, a sponge cake with chocolate buttercream frosting, quickly became a regional specialty.
