ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT EMMY SQUARED PIZZA
Any way you slice it, Emmy Squared has some of the most unique and delicious pizza ever. Their pizza combines everything we love about New York’s grandma slices with thick Detroit-style pizza. The result is signature squares with fluffy focaccia-like dough, edged with “frico crust,” crispy, caramelized crispy cheese, and stripes of sauce.
Emmy Squared’s Story
Former husband-and-wife Emily and Matthew Hyland founded Emmy Squared in Brooklyn, New York, in 2016. The restaurant quickly became popular for its Detroit-style pizza squares, featuring fluffy dough, crispy bottoms, cheesy “frico” crust, and sauce stripes.
The popular pizzas are cooked in pans on a conveyor belt oven. This famous restaurant-pizza parlor makes a variety of pizzas, including:
- Bad Paulie: Caramelized onions, sausage, smoked Gouda, Calabrian chiles, and banana peppers
- Big Ang: Vodka sauce with ricotta, double pecorino, meatballs, and banana peppers
- Good Paulie: Caramelized onions, sausage, and smoked Gouda
- Hot Chicken: Nashville hot chicken, ‘Bama white sauce, and chopped pickles
- Rhody: White pizza with Lacinato kale, chorizo, olive, banana pepper, and pecorino
- Roni Supreme: Red sauce with mozzarella, pepperoni, and Calabrian chilies
- The Emmy: White pizza with banana peppers, red onion, and ranch
The pizza shop now has more than 28 locations across Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, New York City, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington D.C. More locations are on the way, including in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Hylands also founded Emily, which serves thin crust, New York/New Haven-style pizzas baked in wood-burning ovens, and the now-shuttered Violet, which sold grilled pizzas.
Why is it Called Emmy Squared?
Emmy Squared is named Emmy Squared because it is a play on words. The Hylands had already opened their first restaurant Emily, which made round, thin-crust wood-fired pizzas.
Co-founder and Executive Chef Matthew Hyland wanted to open a second restaurant with square pizzas. He settled on Detroit-style pizza and called it Emmy Squared.
How Big is an Emmy Squared Pizza?
Emmy Squared pizzas are 8 inches by 10 inches. Each pizza has 6 square slices.
