Ladurée’s Story
Pâtisserie E. Ladurée, known simply as Ladurée, is a luxury French patisserie. The bakery was founded by French Miller Louis-Ernest Ladurée in Paris in 1862. After a fire, the bakery was turned into a pastry shop. Later, it became a French tea shop.
While the Italians are credited with inventing the macaron cookie, it was Parisian pastry chef Pierre Desfontaines, grandcousin of Ladurée, who invented the modern-day macaron (pronounced mac-ah-ROHN) in 1930.
The baker put two macaron shells made of almond flour together with a creamy ganache filling. The rest is delicious history.
In 1993, customers David and Francis Holder bought the business and worked with the Ladurée family until 1997. That same year, Ladurée opened on the Champs-Elysées. International salons soon followed with the first opening at London’s Harrods in 2006.
Why is Ladurée so Famous?
Ladurée is so famous because it invented the modern day macaron. The macaron is a petit sandwich cookie made of meringue that comes in dozens of colors.
Maison Ladurée sells thousands of its petit, two-bite cookies with smooth tops and ruffled “feet.” They have created more than 200 flavors. More than one dozen flavors are available at any given time.
