Nothing quite compares to the scent of cookies baking in the oven. We can barely wait for them to cool off before indulging in a warm cookie (or two!). We love cookies so much that we don’t mind getting our hands caught in the cookie jar, cookie tin, or cookie box.

Whether you’re a milk and cookies snack person, an eat cookies for breakfast kind of person, or a dunk-your-cookies-into-milk or coffee cookie connoisseur, we have the best batches of cookies.

National Cookie Day is December 4. Here’s everything you need to know to celebrate COOKIES!

When is National Cookie Day?

National Cookie Day is celebrated annually on December 4. It’s a food holiday that celebrates these iconic handheld treats baked with flour, sugar, and fat. Cookies can be chewy, crispy, or soft. The average American eats 200 cookies each year.

History of National Cookie Day

National Cookie Day was first declared by none other than Sesame Street‘s Cookie Monster in 1976. The blue Muppet put it on the calendar on November 26, 1976 and reconfirmed the holiday in a 1980s children’s book.

Matt Nader of San Francisco’s Blue Chip Cookie Company, which claims to have baked the first white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, began celebrating #NationalCookieDay on December 4, 1987 and the rest is delicious history.

Cookies have been around for centuries. The English word for “cookie” comes from the Dutch “koekje” (“little cake”), but it was the Persians that first baked cookies in the seventh century.

For decades, New Yorkers and cookie lovers world-wide have queued for Levain Bakery’s massive 6 oz. cookies. Each rich cookie is perfectly crisp on the outside, satisfyingly soft on the inside, and packed with chocolate morsels.
